Facilities
We are committed to maintaining our existing school facilities – it is a wise investment that will save Carlynton money over the long-term, and also contribute to the optimal education of our students.
While we agree that setting aside money for a rainy day is always a good idea, we feel that Carlynton needs to dedicate some of its $12 million fund balance for basic improvements to all three school buildings and athletic facilities, such as new roofs, improved heating and cooling systems, and a usable running track and tennis courts.
Our main goal is to develop a long-term strategic facilities plan. Unlike the district’s current feasibility study, in which the architecture firm encourages spending of at least $26.7 million on new construction for the elementary grades, a facilities plan would schedule out repairs and maintenance in order of priority and according to what the district can afford.
We believe that maintaining and improving our two neighborhood elementary schools will not only support Carlynton’s educational success, but boost local property values as well.
We never want to shortchange academics to pay for unnecessary building improvements. And just as it happens with our homes, ignoring routine maintenance leads to larger, more expensive problems down the road.
